Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Jochen Heinze

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Heinze has been Chairman of the Board and Medical Director of Magdeburg University Hospital since March 2019. As Chairman of the Board, Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Heinze represents Magdeburg University Hospital in all matters. He is responsible for coordinating patient care at the hospital, ensuring that it is in line with the latest medical findings in all clinical disciplines and ensuring that it is in line with scientific and economic requirements.

After completing his training as a specialist in neurology and his habilitation, Prof. Dr. Heinze went to the University of California in San Diego in 1987 for a two-year research stay. In 1993, he joined the newly founded Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg as Director of the Department of Neurology. There, he played a key role in establishing the focus on neuroscience. Since 2005, he has also headed the Department of Behavioral Neurology at the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology Magdeburg (LIN). From 2005 to 2011, he was a member of the Senate and the Main Committee of the German Research Foundation. As chairman of the Medical Committee of the German Council of Science and Humanities, he evaluated numerous university hospitals between 2010 and 2016 and contributed to the Council's key recommendations on university medicine. Prof. Dr. Heinze is also a member of the Leopoldina, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Academy of Sciences and Literature and the Scientific Commission of Lower Saxony.
